steel blades
The soul of a knife is its blade.
This is why it must be made from the best steels, selected according to
their later application.
Characteristic of RINOX knives is the special emphasis given to the treatment
of their blades. They are made from the best steels, not only from Argentina,
but also from other countries, such as Spain, Germany, Sweden. Thus we
find carbon steel knives such as SAE 1090, SAE 5160, SAE 9260, SAE 52100;
and alloy steels such as 440 C, N678, ATS 34, O1, etc.
Our special Damascus steel blades are also worth mentioning. To have an
idea of the material we are talking about, we must go back some 3,000
years in the history of humankind. Damascus steel was used in ancient
times to make swords. Nowadays its use is widespread in several parts
of the world.
RINOX knives can be made from Japanese-type Damascus steel (laminate composition)
obtained by forge heating, the same method used for making Katanas (samurai
swords). The laminate may consist of up to 860 layers.
They can also be made from primitive Damascus steel (India), used in the
past to make Persian swords. This type of Damascus steel is obtained by
combining old forging processes with modern heat treatment techniques.
To obtain the blades, they are forged and roughed out. First they are
cut into shape, according to their later application. Then they are roughed
out with emery stone. After that, the tang (in case of full-tang knives)
is pierced to take all the possible rivets which will be used to mount
the handle.
The next step is tempering and then, and then, y later reheating in furnaces
at tempering temperatures above 1000 degrees C and reheating temperatures
of up to 230 degrees C.
Reheating is used to remove the strains produced by tempering. Then, blades
are sharpened and polished.
Finally, the logotype is engraved on the blade, and if made of Damascus
steel, its surface would be treated with acids, to render the characteristic
design of this type of steel visible.
